How to run a weekly trade review

A repeatable weekly review routine: check the numbers, find the outliers, look for behaviour patterns and pick one thing to change.

· 5 min read

A daily glance at P&L tells you how the day went. A weekly review tells you whether anything is changing. The routine below takes about half an hour and works best at the same time every week.

1. Start with the numbers, not the trades

Look at the week as a whole before opening any individual trade: net P&L after costs, number of trades, win rate, average win and average loss, and expectancy. Compare them with your recent average rather than with last week alone — one week is a small sample.

2. Find the outliers

Sort the week’s trades by result and open the largest winner and the largest loser. For each, compare what happened with the plan you recorded before entry. Was the loss the size you planned for? Was the win the setup working, or luck?

3. Check behaviour, not just outcomes

  • Did you trade more than usual on any day?
  • Did you enter again shortly after a loss?
  • Did position size creep up after losing trades?
  • Did any trade go in without a stop or planned risk?

These questions matter more than any single result, because they describe habits that will still be there next week.

4. Compare setups

If you tag setups, look at their results side by side over a longer window than the week — a month or a quarter. Be careful with small counts: a setup with five trades has not told you much yet.

5. Pick one change

End the review with a single, specific change for next week — “no new entry within 15 minutes of a loss”, not “be more disciplined”. Write it down, and check it at the next review.

TradeDrift sends weekly and monthly email reports built from the same figures as the app, and tracks a behaviour score week by week, so steps 1 and 3 are ready when you sit down.
